I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Thomasville, home of Georgia Rotary Student Program, since 1977 so I have been involved with GRSP at the club level for almost 50 years. I was a trustee of GRSP for six years and an advisory trustee after that. I helped establish the William A. Watt Memorial Fountain and the GRSP Peace Plaza located at the Marriott Courtyard in downtown Thomasville, GA. My wife, Peggy, and I have been a host family several times, a host “grandparent” several times. I am a Jim Brim Fellow with the GRSP Foundation. Because GRSP is such a unique and valuable program, Peggy & I will continue to support it with our time and donations.
Cheryl Huffman – District 6910
I have been a Rotarian since 1996, when I was invited to join the Rome Rotary Club. The club was dedicated to GRSP, having sponsored two students each year from 1949 until the 1970s, and then one student every year thereafter. When the Rome Seven Hills Rotary Club was chartered in 1997, I became a Charter member. The club began co-sponsoring a student with the Rome club in our second year. My family and I started our GRSP involvement by hosting students during Conclave in Rome and during one or two student weekends held in Rome in the late 1990s. I also volunteered to be a driver for the student when host families and Trustees were not available. When I was asked to become a Trustee in 2017, I was delighted to accept. Meeting the new students each year and seeing them grow and change during their time here is such a joy. My eight years of service as a Trustee provided adventures, opportunities for friendships and learning. GRSP has helped me become more global in my thinking about the people of the world and how we all fit together.
Rob Kellner – District 6920
Upon my arrival at Valdosta State in 1983, I became aware of the Georgia Rotary Student Program and was intrigued with the program. In 1999, I joined Rotary and had the opportunity to get involved with the program and begin to understand how unique and special this program is. I have met numerous students over the past twenty years that have become lifelong friends and I enjoy the opportunity to rekindle these friendships when I travel abroad or they return to Georgia for a visit. The generosity of the Georgia Rotarians either through their willingness to become a host family, serve as a host for one of the weekend get togethers or simply through financial contributions coupled with eagerness of the students create a special environment where all parties involved benefit. The parties benefit by breaking down walls and eliminating the stereotypes that are often portrayed in the media. I cannot think of a better program to invest my time and energy than the Georgia Rotary Student Program and its goal of “Peace through Understanding.”
