Gregory
Adams

Gregory H. (Greg) Adams was born on February
5, 1948 in Thomasville, Georgia. He is the only
child of Haywood and Louise S. Adams. He graduated
from Thomasville High School in 1966. In 1971, he
graduated from Georgia Tech with a B.S. in
Industrial Management; he was also a member of the
Letterman Club and Sigma Nu fraternity.
Greg returned to Thomasville in 1971, joining his
father in the family business -- a medium and
heavy-duty truck dealership for International
Harvester Company (now Navistar International
Transportation Corporation). Two years later, he
became owner and president. He married the former
Anne Rivers (Miss Thomasville 1975) of Pavo, Ga.
in September 1977, and they have three children:
Ashley Austin (18), Caroline Haywood (16), and
Gregory Nearing (15).
In 1971, Greg was proposed for membership in the
Thomasville Rotary Club by his friend and mentor,
Harry T. Jones, Jr.; he has had perfect attendance
since 1975. He served as Club President in
1983-84, the same year PDG Frank Bentley, of Sandy
Springs, was District Governor. During his year,
the Thomasville Club received the Best Club award,
the Best Scrapbook award, and a Presidential
Citation.
He has served Rotary as District Conference
Chairman, Area Coordinator for Polio-Plus, Charter
Member of the GRSP Endowment Trustees, District
6900 GRSP Endowment Chairman, President's
Instructor at the District Assembly with PDG Jim
Brim (1985 to 1995), Governor's representative,
and GRSP Vice Chairman, 1990-96. He is a Paul
Harris Fellow, a Will Watt Fellow, a Hue Thomas
Fellow and a Kendall Weisiger Fellow.
Beyond Rotary, Greg continues his "Service
Above Self" commitment to his community. He
is past Chairman of the Board of Archbold Medical
Center (five hospitals and three nursing homes); member
of the Board of the Thomasville Chamber of
Commerce; and has twice served as president of the
W. R. Milton YMCA, where he helped establish its
endowment fund and developed a partnership with
the City of Thomasville for the operation of the
Remington Park recreation complex. He is a member
of the Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of
Fame and continues to hold the Thomasville High
School discus record at 169' 11".
Greg is a life-time member of the First
Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Will Watt was an
Elder and revered leader. Some of his earliest
memories of the Watt family, include "Mr.
Will" bringing GRSP students to church. He
has served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and
elder. He has been chairman of the World Mission
Conference, Stewardship Campaign, and Finance
Committee. In 1991, he served on the pulpit
Nominating Committee, which called Dr. William P.
Steel to the church. Four years later, he lead a
successful Capital Funds Campaign, and has served as the moderator of the Presbytery's
Finance committee. He is also a member of the
president's advisory committee of the Presbyterian
Homes. His father, Haywood Adams, is an Elder
Emeritus. Greg’s son, Nearing, is named after
his late pastor and friend, Dr. Wilson L. Nearing
Jr.
Greg enjoys sports, reading, photography,
computers, flying, travel, and current events.
Being an avid stock market watcher, Greg writes a
market letter for a small group of private
investors and market professionals. He is a
technical analyst and developer of a computerized
stock index futures trading systems which seeks to
take advantage of extremes in market psychology.
He joined Shields & Company in 1999 and is now
the chief investment strategist for the
Thomasville office.
